Sashiko - Visible Mending on Denim

  • The Yellow House 3842 Main Rd Tiverton, RI United States (map)

This workshop will focus on hand-stitching techniques based on traditional Japanese sashiko, its history, and recent revival in haute couture and today’s slow fashion movement.

Participants should bring a denim garment in need of repair. We’ll practice on scrap denim (supplied) prior to stitching on a garment.

Each participant will receive guidance as they stitch a new surface design on their personal piece, adding both utility and unique style. The workshop fee includes a sashiko tool kit, containing needles, thread, snips, threader, palm thimble, and stitch guide for reference.

This workshop will be taught by Natalie Pangaro (a.k.a. Rose Thornwood). Natalie’s passion for design and textiles began at an early age and has been fortified throughout her 25-year graphic design career and more recently, through her immersion into various methods of textile repair and fiber arts. www.rosethornwood.com
